Questions about understanding and applying for state benefits are a primary area of confusion for departments and family survivors. While there are substantial death benefits available from the Federal Government through the Public Safety officer's benefits program (PSOB), there are additional benefits for each state, and in several states match the PSOB. The fact is that many families and law enforcement departments are unaware that these additional resources are available. Even if they are aware, the process to obtain benefits for a family can be complex, involving legal terminology and requirements for documentation, a difficult application process, and statutory deadlines.
When a department has a question regarding state benefits available the families, Foundation staff can forward their question to associated state benefit director, assuring they will obtain the correct answers at the first call.
There is no other organization in the country that provides the service of direct access to the top state retirement executives to have questions answered concerning benefits issues. Our organization is the resource for the United States. Simply put, with the establishment of the State Benefits Advisory Committee, The Badge of Honor Memorial Foundation can provide great comfort to the survivors that no loved one "falls between the cracks."
